Fingerprint Jewellery in Australia: How a Single Touch Becomes a Keepsake

Some gifts are beautiful. A few are irreplaceable. Fingerprint jewellery is one of them: a piece of silver or gold that carries the exact lines of someone you love, so a single touch becomes something you can wear every day.

I'm Francisca, a jeweller working from my studio in Bronte, Sydney, and every fingerprint piece I make starts the same way: with a small ball of wax and a gentle press of a finger.

Why a fingerprint?

No two fingerprints are the same. That's what makes them such a powerful keepsake. Parents capture a baby's tiny print, partners exchange each other's, and many families keep the print of someone they've lost. Each piece is truly one of a kind, because it can only ever belong to one person.

How a fingerprint becomes jewellery

  1. Your kit arrives. When you order, I post you a fingerprint kit with impression wax, simple instructions and a prepaid return envelope.
  2. You soften the wax. Place the wax on a spoon in a jar of hot (not boiling) water until it turns about halfway from white to translucent.
  3. You take the print. Press the finger gently into the wax, enough to capture the detail without squashing it. Choose the finger with the clearest lines. For two prints in one piece, press both fingers in at the same time.
  4. You post it back. When the wax turns white again, return it in the prepaid envelope.
  5. I cast your piece. In my Bronte studio I turn your print into a pendant, necklace or earrings, which takes about two weeks. Your finished piece arrives beautifully boxed, usually 3 to 4 weeks from the day you order.

You can watch the whole process in my step-by-step video.

Silver or gold?

Sterling silver is perfect for everyday wear and a lovely first keepsake. Gold, in 9ct or 18ct, makes an heirloom that will be passed down. You can also add an initial engraved on the back.
